the Sultan Al-Muayyad Mosque

1. Description

The mosque originally had 3 minarets; one collapsed after a short period of its construction, while the other two were built by the architect Muhammad ibn al-Qazzaz using the towers of Bab Zoueila as both buttresses and bases from which the two identical minarets rise to be seen from both the inside and the outside of Fatimid Cairo.

2. History

The construction of the mosque was started in 1415 and completed in 1421. Sultan Al-Muayyad Mosque was buit by the Mamluk sultan Al-Mu'ayyad , and he buit it on the site of an old prison where he was imprisoned when he was a Mamluk soldier. Sultan Al-Muayyad Mosque is located near Bab Zuwaila. It is considered one of the most fascinating examples of the Mamluk architecture in Egypt, and because of its site, the mosque and it's minarets became a land mark of Cairo.
